side right now. that is not what they need. what the romney side needs is that they still have to persuade people that governor romney is the guy they should vote for. at the national level, that means they need to fix whatever has gone so wrong with their campaign message and they need to stop doing whatever it is that has turned so many people off to their candidate. when you ask voters whether they like this mitt romney guy, the answer is a very, very plain answer. no. his favorable ratings are in the low 40s. almost 10 points lower than the ratings for president obama. lower, even, than the famously unpopular former president george w. bush right now. swing state voters say they do not think that mitt romney cares about the needs and problems of people like them. some of mr. romney's numbers are just shockingly bad. i mean double check. shockingly bad. look at the percentage of swing state voters who say mitt romney's policies will favor the middle class. in florida it's 8%. in ohio it's 9%. in pennsylvania it's 9%. whatever the romney campaign has done to get themselves to

, lower income families with children would pay an average $2,000 more. but mitt romney is right to point out that others have poked holes in the math, including bloomberg, that middle class would be hit with an increase of only $1,000 not $2,000. the tax policy center was told about this. according to bloomberg, the authors changed some of their statements. the conservative tax foundation claims that the center didn't account for economic growth and romney's plan would pay for itself, that there would be no middle class income tax increase. last month came on the show and did the math and said if you close or cap itemized deductions and assume that the economy grows at 3%. historically, that would be reasonable. right now it's been a challenge. they would raise $200 billion, which means you wouldn't have to raise taxes on the middle class. it could add up. if he could sell it, could it be the issue that wins him the election? the senior political analyst and fiscal responsibility and reform. great to see both of you. appreciate it. doug, let me start with you. this stood out to me last n

today is that mitt romney will actually do his debate walk through tomorrow over at the university of denver, so he'll be working on this all, you know, basically right up until the last moment. he had his top surrogates on the campaign trail and romney has an event later on today in littleton, colorado. paul ryan has been pretty busy, almost nonstop, out on the campaign trail the last couple of days. and so, you know, i think he'll let his surrogates do the talking for him until the debate gets started. one other thing we heard from kevin madden yesterday on the campaign plane heading into denver yesterday, brooke, you heard over the weekend, chris christie saying that this race is going to be turned upside down that romney will have such a strong performance that it is going to be sort of a game changer. i asked kevin madden about that yesterday, and he said he doesn't think that the campaign doesn't think that one event, one moment during these debates is going to decide and determine everything. they just don't see it that way. they like christie's enthusiasm, they say they're

is there a way, are you doing anything to get into the debate cycle with obama and romney? >> host: we had a similar question, governor johnson, via twitter. what do you say? >> guest: well, right now i'm excluded from the first debate. the commission that determines who gets in the debates is the presidential debate commission, and guess what? the presidential debate commission is private, and they're made up of republicans and democrats with absolutely no interest whatsoever in seeing a third voice on stage. we have filed three lawsuits to get me on stage based on other third-party candidates who have filed lawsuits. there doesn't seem to be, there doesn't seem to be much hope, but we filed on anti-trust grounds, something that has not been done before. >> host: how much do these debates matter, gary johnson, and what are you looking forward to hearing on wednesday? >> guest: well, the debates are tantamount to my having a chance at winning. without being on the debates, i think that, um, you know, you can just kind of close the lid on being able to win the campaign -- win the election.
